Newt Gingrich has taken the lead in PPP's national polling. He's at 28% to 25% for Herman Cain and 18% for Mitt Romney. The rest of the Republican field is increasingly looking like a bunch of also rans: Rick Perry is at 6%, Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul at 5%, Jon Huntsman at 3%, and Gary Johnson and Rick Santorum each at 1%.

Looks like the Republicans are now on track to nominate another less-than conservative Republican.
Oh well, at least watching him debate Obama will be almost worth it. Newt vs Obama is no contest.
Excellent points all around. I would add this: only because the Democrats have moved so far leftward have our definitions been skewed. What used to be just moderate is now suddenly hard-core conservative. Likewise, liberal is the new moderate. Socialist is the present liberal.
Your larger point about there being no purity in politics is worth repeating. The problem with nominating MY perfect candidate is that few others would also think of them as a perfect candidate. Someone I have less in common with is more likely to have much in common with more people.

While it is true he is not the perfect Conservative, who really is? I was not supporting Newt originally, but after going back and reading up on his service to this country over the last 40 years, I have concluded no one could be better for the job. He is the only person running with a track record of bi partisanship. He got a Republican Congress to work with a Democrat president, something unheard of a mere 16 years later. More important that national debts, tax reform, healthcare, the environment, religion, is the need for our people to stop being so divided. There is too much hatred in this country, and I am not referring to the racial variety, just simple partisan hatefulness. No pure Conservative will ever gain support from most Democrats, and vice versa with a Hard core Liberal. This country need someone both parties can believe in, even if they don't agree with that person's views 100% of the time. My wife and I don't see eye to eye on 100% of issues, why would expect a politician to 100% share my beliefs. While I like Herman Cain, let's keep him as an advisor for our economy and tax reform, but that man would make a horrible President when it comes to foreign affairs.
